UAB School of Optometry

The UAB Vision Science Research Center Education and Outreach Module issues a Holiday Call for Art each year. This art opportunity is for Alabama students with visual impairments who live in or attend school in the State of Alabama.

This art opportunity highlights the abilities of the students and provides artwork for The UAB School of Optometry Annual Holiday Card. The focus of the artwork emphasizes the holiday season.

A reception honoring all artists entering the Call for Art will is held allowing them to meet Dean John Amos and the UAB Vision Science Research Center Education and Outreach staff.

Judging is done by the UAB Vision Science Research Center Education Module, affiliates, and selected judges. For information or to enter the next Call for Art contact:

2003 UAB School of Optometry Holiday Card
“ The Three Kings”

Shannon Middleton, son of Telisha Middleton Dotson of Fultondale, Alabama, is designer of the 2003 Holiday Card. Shannon is a 5th grader at Fultondale Elementary School in the Jefferson County School System. His teacher for the visually impaired, Cheryl Horncastle, notes math is his favorite subject and Shannon is always “smiling and chatty”.

This art opportunity highlights the abilities of the students and provides artwork for Congressman and Mrs. Spencer Bachus. The focus of the artwork emphasizes the holiday season.

A reception honoring all artists entering the Call for Art will is held allowing them to meet Congressman and Mrs. Bachus, Dean John Amos and the UAB Vision Science Research Center Education and Outreach staff.

"Holiday Tree"

Cover Artist, Cody Holt of Hoover, Alabama, is the son of Michael and Amy Holt. He is a 2nd grade student at Deer Valley Elementary School in the Hoover City School System. Cody’s teacher for students with visual impairments is Melanie Weldon. Cody loves school and likes to play the piano and do Taekwon Do. The UAB School of Optometry, Vision Science Research Center Education and Outreach Module, sponsors the Holiday Call for Art each year to offer opportunities for students who are visually impaired.
