Helen Keller Art Show of Alabama Tour Winners (2010)

The Helen Keller Art Show was established in 1983 as a cooperative project between agencies serving children with visual impairments. The Helen Keller Art Show, presenting the winning entries of various media of art by children who are visually impaired, blind and deafblind, will be shown throughout many agencies and museums in Alabama this year. Support for this statewide contest is provided through the UAB Vision Science Research Center-Outreach Education Module, the UAB School of Optometry, the UAB School of Education, the Helen Keller Birthplace Foundation, and the Alabama Federation of the Council for Exceptional Children Helen Keller Chapter of the Division on Visual Impairments.

The artwork is unique with emphasis on creativity, color and tactile media. The Helen Keller Art Show solicits art from all ages of students with visual impairments in the Alabama public, private, home, and residential schools.

The grand prize entry, selected by the Helen Keller Festival Board as the Patty Johnson Award, remains in a permanent collection at Ivy Green in Tuscumbia, Helen Keller’s birthplace. The winner and his/her family participate in the Helen Keller Festival Parade and are recognized during the performance of The Miracle Worker. The Colbert County Board of Tourism and the UAB School of Education select Purchase Award Winners. Other entries are auctioned by silent bid with the proceeds going to the next year’s framing and tour. To place a bid, fill out a bid form from the art gallery site and return it via mail.
Throughout the years, many children with visual impairments, blindness and deafblindness have participated in the show, attended The Miracle Worker, and had art displayed in art museums and agency galleries around the state of Alabama.
A very special thanks is due to the continued support of the teachers of Alabama who encourage and guide our students during the creation of their works. It is with enthusiasm that the teachers of the state of Alabama commemorate Anne Sullivan Macy’s dedication to teaching the sensory impaired child.

Dedication

It is with great pride and much gratitude that the Helen Keller Show is dedicated in memory of:

Mrs. Patty Johnson
Niece of Helen Keller

Without her, the association of children, arts, and Ivy Green would not have been possible. Her caring ways, her charm, and her tender words created an atmosphere where this annual event could flourish.
